ILUS - International Land Use Symposium 2021

is postponed to 2022

Modelling an uncertain future: spatial data science for sustainable land use

Dear all,

When we issued the call for the 4th International Land Use Symposium (ILUS 2021) two months ago, it seemed that the Covid-19 pandemic was receding. The trends observed at that time both in Israel and Europe made the planning of our international meeting in November 2021 a calculated risk that, in our opinion, had quite high chances of realization.

Similar to what sometimes happens with land use systems, the pandemic development followed unexpected and unfortunate dynamics. The spread of new Corona variants in many parts of the world provoked tougher travel restrictions both in Israel and in Europe. Under these new conditions, the participation of scientific fellows outside Israel in the ILUS 2021 turned complicated and unpleasant. After long months of an almost exclusive reliance on online interactions, we intended from the very beginning of the organization of ILUS 2021 to hold this meeting in person, and for this reason we prefer to postpone the ILUS meeting until 2022, hoping for better times.

All the submitted proposals are stored in the ILUS 2021 site and will be reviewed once the meeting is rescheduled. We thank all colleagues who submitted proposals, and encourage you all to participate in a future edition next year; we will share our updated plans during the next months.
We look forward to meet you at ILUS 2022. Please accept our apology for this inconvenience and thank you all for your participation.

The ILUS 2021 organizing committee,
Dani Broitman
Martin Behnisch
Itzhak Benenson

On behalf of the organizing committee it is our pleasure to draw your attention to the 4th International Land Use Symposium on "Modelling an uncertain future: spatial data science for sustainable land use".

The symposium will be
held November 23-24 2021, in-person (not virtually) at the Technion in Haifa, Israel.

A pre-conference Workshop on Geosimulation of urban transformations and land use will be held on November 22 at the same venue.

The organizing committee welcomes the submission of original research contributions aimed at advancing our understanding of land use and land cover (LULC) dynamics, in order to cope with the emerging challenges of sustainable development and disruptive local and global events, including the COVID-19 pandemic.

The upcoming event will focus on the following thematic areas:

  • Post-COVID City: How to Improve Emergency Preparedness?
  • The Economics of Land Use: Sustainability versus free markets.
  • Land-Use Governance: Role of planning for sustainable land use?
  • Climate Change and Land-Use Dynamics: What will happen in the next decades?

We look forward to your contributions and participation in the 4th International Land Use Symposium at the Technion in Haifa!

Best regards,
Dr. Dani Broitman and Dr. Martin Behnisch (on behalf of the organizing committee)
